Contractor Mansell announced pre-tax profits in 1999 of £7.1m, up 12% on 1998. Turnover in 1999 rose to £450m, a climb of £30m. Chief executive, David Beardsmore, said the future looked rosy: "Our businesses have begun the year well and the group looks set to benefit from the favourable market forecast for the next two years."

A new senior management structure has been introduced that sees Philip Cleaver brought in as chief operating officer, responsible for the day-to-day performance of Mansell's operating divisions.

The group has also established a national projects division to meet the challenge of customers' more complex demands. The division will focus on education, housing, healthcare and private finance initiative work. It will also push for a share of the anticipated growth in social housing.
