UCATT reviews priorities
by John d'Arcy
Improved democratic procedures and closer links with the priorities
of the union's membership are named as the key aims of the sixth
UCATT rules revision conference which is being held this
week.
George Brumwell, general secretary of UCATT, commented: "We think
we know what the members' current priorities are. They are job
security and pay - in that order.
"But the principal concerns of workers are going to be different in
a few years time. We want to fine tune the system so that our
feedback reflects the views of the vast silent majority of
members."
He added: "We recently held a very successful seminar for full-time
officials to map out our future. But we want to reach the widest
possible number of our members, possibly through random sample
surveys. We want to find out their views on such issues as the Egan
report, pensions, and health care."
The general secretary said that further streamlining and
modernisation were also fundamental objectives of the rules update.
