This year Intermat promises to be bigger and better with the
earthmoving sector well represented by big names such as Case,
Caterpillar, JCB, Komatsu and Volvo. And, according to the
organisers, the lifting and handling sector will boast a 40%
increase. with Genie, JLG, UpRight and Pinguely Haulotte holding
court.
EARTHMOVING
No European exhibition would be complete without the presence of
British manufacturers, and there will be quite a few flying the
flag at Intermat 2000.
Among them are JCB who will be launching four new products,
spanning the compact and heavyline ranges. Heading the list is the
new JS200W wheeled excavator, a 20t vehicle developed to meet the
demands of the European market, which has tripled in the last three
years. JCB will also be launching its new generation of Robot Skid
Steer Loaders, the 160, 170 and the 170 Hi-flow at the show. The
newly designated Robot 160 and 170 skid steer loaders have both
been restyled to replace the twin loader tower with a lower, single
structure. In total JCB's stand will incorporate a line-up of more
than 20 machines.
British dumper manufacturer Thwaites is also keen to impress and
will be exhibiting its products on the Ammann stand. Ammann became
distributor for Thwaites in France last September. Thwaites will be
exhibiting its TD12 rear dump truck, which for the Year 2000 has
been fitted with Perkins' 'green' 1004-40T turbocharged diesel. The
TD12 has twin-drive axles, which provide the options of 4-wheel,
2-wheel or crab steering. A 5-speed powershift transmission gives
the machine a maximum haul speed of 39km/h. Latest models from the
Thwaites site dumper range will also be on show - the Alldrive 7t
with front tip or Powerswivel skip.
Also present at the show will be Swedish dump-truck manufacturer
Moxy with the MT36 ADT.
American giant Case will be demonstrating a veritable show of
strength, exhibiting over 50 machines. The line up will include the
brand new 80t hydraulic excavator, the 2.3t model 23, a new star in
the Maxi range, and several backhoe and wheeled loaders. There will
also be a sneak preview on the Case stand of the SR215 model, a
short radius excavator designed for urban building sites. Everybody
is into skid-steers and differentiating theirs from rivals and Case
is no exception.
At Intermat it will launch a major new feature on its XT Series:
the 'Ride Control' option, which reduces the pitching caused by the
movement of the machine when loading material and when driving on
irregular surfaces or roads, making driving more comfortable while
improving the lifetime of the driveline's components.
Despite being taken over by New Holland, which has subsequently
merged with Case to form CNH, O&K will still be distinguishable
by its traditional red livery. New mini excavators and small
wheeled loaders will be presented at the show. The mini excavator
range comprises four models - RH 1.17, RH 1.29, RH 1.35 and RH 1.48
-Êwith operating weights between 1.7t and 4.8t. They are
fitted with rubber tracks as standard, but can also be delivered
with steel tracks on request.
Water-cooled Mitsubishi engines, which are considered to be
reliable, powerful, quiet and economical in fuel consumption, form
the core component of the minis. Gradients of up to 60% can be
overcome due to the powerful travel-drive.
Not to be outdone, Fiat-Hitachi will be displaying 40 models on its
stand, 13 of which are new. Two of these are updated excavator
models: the EX455LCH and the FH450BEH, which replace the FH450LCH
and the FH450BEH. They have a heavier operating weight (+1100kg)
enabling them to improve front stability by about 10%, and 5% for
side operations. Engine power has also been increased by 3kW. At
the same time Fiat-Hitachi has replaced its FD145 and FD175 dozers
with the new D150 and D180 models. The D150 is available with 'All
Hydraulic' blade and a semi-U blade; the D180 is available in a
semi-U or straight blade and with a pitched blade.
Check out Volvo's new range of hydraulic crawler excavators
featuring six top-of-the-range models. All feature upgraded
hydraulics, excellent operator visibility, the introduction of a
five-switch joystick control, and a quick-fit bracket. The smallest
model in the new range is the EC140 weighing in at 14t. The largest
models in the range are the EC360 and the EC460. New wheeled
loaders will also feature on the Volvo stand - the L50D and L70D
with operating weights of 8.2t and 12.2t. The most obvious
difference is the rear end design. Rounded hood corners and
smoother contours on the counterweight provide a modern appearance,
while matt-grey paint on the top of the hood eliminates distracting
glare from the sun.
A new 10t excavator will be introduced to the market by Korean
tiger Hyundai, which took over Halla last year. The Robex 95W-3
gives Hyundai an entry into the medium-sized excavator market,
which is expanding and fills the gap between its 5t mini excavator
and its new 13t excavator.
However, the Robex 95W-3, which has a width of 2,345mm and a
maximum travel speed of 30km/h, will not be available for purchase
until autumn. It comes in two versions: either with variable boom
or mono-boom. The bucket is equipped with an offset at the boom
foot.
Hyundai will also be presenting upgraded versions of its R200
series crawler and wheel excavators. One model is a wheeled
excavator, upgraded from the former Dash 2 to the new Dash 3
innovations. The other model is a completely new tracked excavator.
Also making their debut will be three new forklift trucks following
the integration of Halla's range into the Hyundai programme.
Caterpillar and its French dealer Bergerat Monnoyeur Travaux
Publics will use the exhibition to show over 35 models from the
extensive Cat product line. The Cat exhibit will feature 12 new or
improved products making their first public appearance in Europe.
These will include the 75kW to 111kW class 924G wheel loader and
the 7.7t 307B and 19.5t 318B excavators.
One of the main attractions will undoubtedly be the new Cat skid

the compact versions of Komatsu's D65-12 series, with a few
features not yet available on the D65. The D61 will be available in
two models: the D61EX-12 standard model and the D61PX-12-swamp
dozer.
The standard EX model has a shoe width of 600mm. The PX swamp
dozer's shoes are 860mm wide. Both have a long track, with more
rollers, delivering a low ground pressure. The new D61-12 models
also have hydraulically-assisted hydrostatic steering systems. This
enables turning while dozing, straight travel when side-loading the
blade, there is no need for cross steering on downhill slopes,
grading without ground damage and counter-rotation for improved
manoeuvrability.
Hydrema will be introducing its new 900 MPV multipurpose vehicle
and compact 11t excavator with infra-red computer communication at
the show.
The company says the former can work as a telescopic loader,
