AMEC WINS TILBURY BERTH
Amec Capital Projects has been appointed contractor for the civil
engineering works for a new berth at Northfleet Hope on the Thames
at Tilbury, Essex. The £20m project will double the existing
riverside capacity for Tilbury Container Services, which is jointly
owned by P&O Ports, Associated British Ports and the Port of
Tilbury. In total, 289m of quay will be created, bringing the total
quay length to 600m. Construction will begin this month for
completion by autumn 2001.
TURKEY BECKONS UK EXPORTERS
British Trade International is staging a conference in London on 14
June to highlight the work opportunities available in Turkey for
building products and materials suppliers. The event will be
chaired by Michael Rose and will include speakers from a Turkish
contractor and consultant together with British companies that are
already exporting to the country. Turkey's construction market is
forecast at £17bn this year and the UK currently supplies only

BALFOUR WINS WORK WORTH £31m
Balfour Beatty has picked up four contracts worth more than
£31m. The largest is a £10.2m award from developer MEPC
for a three-storey office on the Chineham Business Park in
Basingstoke. Other contracts are: external works for Spitalfields
Development Corporation in London worth £6.1m; the £8.2m
refurb of Holborn Police Station; and a £6.8m project for
Optima Community Association to repair two 32-storey residential
tower blocks in Birmingham.
E-COMMERCE OPPORTUNITIES
The Construction Products Association is to host a conference on
the opportunities presented by e-commerce. The conference, on 11
July at Lords Cricket Ground, will focus on: understanding the
business opportunities; the effect on the supply chain; developing
trading opportunities; and implementing an e-business strategy. For

HEERY LANDS COLLEGE ROLE
Construction manager Heery International has been selected by North
Hertfordshire College for the £12m redevelopment of the
Stevenage Centre. The design team will be appointed this month with
building work expected to start in January 2001.
ECA CERTIFICATION SCHEME
The Electrical Contractors' Association has reached agreement with
BRE Certification to provide a certification scheme for assessing
the technical competence of electrical contractors. The scheme is
due to kick-in later this year and BRE Certification is an approved
assessor for the Government's Quality Mark scheme.
SMALL CONTRACTOR SHAMES THE BIG BOYS
A small Surrey contractor has put many large contractors to shame
by being awarded BS EN 14001 - the environmental management
standard. Burren & Whitaker of Smallfield employs just 14
people and has a turnover of between £1.5m and £2m.
NEW ACT PROMOTES E-COMMERCE
Trading electronically took another step forward last week when the
Electronics Communications Bill received Royal Assent. The new Act
will give legal certainty to electronic signatures and will
encourage the development of secure and trusted e-commerce
services. The Act will enable existing laws, which insist on pen
and paper, to be modified or swept aside.
