Railtrack 'not ditching' £5.4bn WCML

Railtrack has poured scorn on a newspaper report that it is about to ditch the £5.4bn upgrade of the West Coast Main Line in favour of a cut-price alternative.

The Guardian reported on Monday (29 May) that Railtrack wanted only to upgrade the track because it was not able to complete the £3bn worth of advanced signalling for the route by the 2005 deadline.

A Railtrack spokeswoman said the report was completely unfounded and that "as far as the Board of Railtrack was concerned, it is full steam ahead".

Another Railtrack official commented: "We are pressing ahead with phase one of the programme (the track improvements) and a lot of work has already been done in the Manchester, Birmingham and Euston areas. We are also doing a lot of work in other areas as well as looking at the signalling."
