BMW plans £60m plant
by Glenda Thisdell
A new £60m factory and corporate headquarters for Rolls-Royce
cars is to be built at Goodwood, West Sussex early next year.
The move is in preparation for when German carmaker BMW assumes
control of the prestige marque from Volkswagen in 2003. At this
point, the new factory will need to be ready to produce cars at a
rate of 1,000 per annum. BMW said it would be looking for a British
contractor to build the plant on a 3.2ha area of land within a 12ha
site near the Goodwood racetrack.
The carmaker said: "The particular character and ambience of
Goodwood will be taken into account through the special
architectural design of the building complex.
"We intend not to make the facility an imposition on the landscape
and extensive landscaping with rolling banks and planting will form
part of the development." An architectural contest is already
underway.
