Confederation cuts its losses
by John d'Arcy
The Construction Confederation has reported a "very satisfactory
financial performance" for last year when it came closest yet to
breaking even.
Final figures for the year ended 31 December 1999 saw a deficit of
£9,000. This compares with a revised deficit of £76,000
in 1998. Accumulated losses in the first two years of the
three-year-old confederation amounted to over £100,000.
Total income last year rose by 6.5% to £2.3m, including
£1.56m from subscriptions. The general reserve fund stood at
£5.7m.
New chief executive Jennie Price said that general confederation
policy will be to focus on a limited number of issues and deal with
them thoroughly. She said these are likely to include recruitment
and the industry's image. "We need to think carefully about pay and
conditions, security of employment, and site conditions".
Out-going president, Sir Martin Laing said, "paying attention to
Europe continues top be one of our top priorities".
