Balfour raided by FBI
Following a dawn raid by 40 FBI agents on a Balfour Beatty project
office in America, the construction group says it has no idea as to
the reason for the unexpected swoop.
The raid took place at 7am on 7 June. Documents and computers were
removed by FBI agents acting on behalf of the office of the
inspector general, America's equivalent of the UK's National Audit
Office.
The site, in Massachusetts, was the joint project office of Balfour
Beatty Construction and Massachusetts Electric Construction. The jv
has been working on a contract which is part of the £1.9bn
railway modernisation of the North East Corridor.
When awarded in December 1995, Balfour's contract was worth
£260m. However its current value has risen to £400m as
the design by Morrison Knutsen/Spie Battignolles has developed,
partly as a result of client changes.
"The last stage payment was made last week, with Amtrak[the client]
saying it was satisfied with the work," said a Balfour spokesman.
