No significant hold-up for A63 Selby bypass
Brian Warner is wrong to claim that the Highways Agency has kept
contractors in the dark about proposals for the A63 Selby bypass
and that there have been significant delays in awarding the
contract (CJ 6 June).
We have in fact kept bidders informed about the progress on letting
this very important scheme.
The tender assessment and contract award process is expected to
take between eight and nine weeks, rather than the eight to nine
months suggested in your article.
The bypass is being built under a design and build contract that
has been welcomed by contractors.
Tenders were assessed in May and we expect to award the contract
soon.
Between July and October, preliminary work will start and the main
contract will begin in October with completion by mid-2004.
We are working hard with contractors to reduce the cost of
tendering and to shorten the time between the scheme being approved
and the project being completed.
