English Heritage (EH) has advised the government to call in Sellar
Property Group's London Bridge Tower (LBT) proposal because it
would be a "spike through the heart" of the area.
The £300m, 66-storey LBT has been dismissed by EH as "wholly
inappropriate and unsympathetic to the character of
Southwark".
Sellar Property, however, is not giving up. "Our next step is to
secure the support of Southwark Planning Committee. We've submitted
the planning application which should be heard in September,"
explained Barry Ostle, Sellar's property director.
"Once we've obtained planning consent it will be down to the mayor
of London to decide if he will support the project. At present we
have his support," said Ostle.
"It will then be up to transport secretary Stephen Byers to decide
if the case should go to a public inquiry."
Irvine Sellar, chief executive of Sellar Property, refuted EH's
claims that the tower would obscure views of St Paul's Cathedral.
She said: "We firmly believe LBT merely provides a backdrop to the
Cathedral and obscures nothing."
