Manchester lights the way
Manchester City Council has turned the spotlight on three firms to
contest a £70m privately financed streetlighting deal.
From an original list of 10 outfits that sent in prequalification
bids, the council has focused on Amey Highways, Alfred McAlpine and
Seeboard/Balfour Beatty.
The first five years of the 25-year concession will involve
replacing 20,000 deteriorating lighting columns, maintaining and
replacing streetlights, road signs and illuminated bollards.
A council source said: "The three companies have until October to
return bids. We shall then ask two of them to work up best and
final offers and hope to appoint our preferred bidder in February
2002." Work on site is expected to start in August 2002.
The council's stock currently consists of nearly 53,000 lighting
columns, more than 6,000 illuminated signs and bollards on
highways, housing estates and parks.
