The Major Contractors Group (MCG) has appointed an implementation
manager to head up its plans to revolutionise site culture in the
construction industry.
Skanska Construction's John Bradshaw has been given the task of
delivering the commitments made by MCG members at its Health &
Safety Charter launch last month.
Bradshaw will also work with outside organisations to manage
central issues and with the Construction Industry Training Board to
meet the skills certification deadline of 2003 for all member site
workers.
MCG chairman Keith Clarke said the appointment is further evidence
of the MCG's determination to deliver on the commitments made at
the Health & Safety Summit in February.
All 23 MCG member companies will face annual checks by independent
auditors to ensure they are complying with the charter.
According to the charter, safety committees of at least 25 workers
will be set up on MCG member sites and builders will be able to
stop work if they feel at risk.
Any firm found breaking the promises it signed up to could face
disciplinary action or even expulsion from the group.
