A new scheme providing a single set of criteria for the regular
technical assessment of electrical contractors was launched last
week.
The aim of the Electrotechnical Assessment Scheme, which is being
piloted throughout the UK for the remainder of the year, is to
ensure that all work is carried out in compliance with the relevant
standards.
The Electrical Installation Industry Liaison Committee, which is
made up of the principal bodies of the electrical installation
industry, welcomed the pilot scheme.
Secretary Phil Buckle said: "The availability of a single industry
scheme that is transparent and authoritative will have significant
benefits for both customers and the industry.
"For customers, it offers the assurance that their electricians are
technically competent and fully able to carry out the work
required. For the industry, it means a single, industry-recognised
standard of competence."
If the pilot tests are successful, the scheme will be introduced
formally in early 2002.
