HSE asbestos costs to match industry saving
The £6bn cost to UK industry of meeting the Health &
Safety Executive's (HSE) new asbestos regulations (CJ 11 July) over
the next 49 years will be matched by a similar level of
savings.
The implementation of a Duty of Care means the responsibility for
asbestos falls firmly in the lap of occupiers.
The regulations bringing in the duty will be introduced in summer
2002 and will be fully in force by the end of 2004. The HSE is
about to embark on a three- to five-year campaign designed to
"persuade and in the later stages cajole those responsible for
buildings to comply with their duties".
Meanwhile the HSE is also involved in the development of the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors' new asbestos accreditation
service. It does not rival the HSE's Methods for the Determination
of Hazardous Substances (MDHS) 100 guidance document, which
surveyors will be expected to comply with as well.
