HGB passes stage-one school test
HBG is understood to have chalked up a stage-one victory on a
£15m deal to build a new school in Hull. The first phase of
the two-stage tender for the Endeavour School project focused on
design, advance works and a guaranteed maximum price. Now the
contractor will work up a fully fledged bid, with the city council
expected to award the job formally in the autumn. The contract will
be let as a partnering deal with the council. Work is expected to
start on site in November this year. The school, for 1,200 pupils,
is expected to open in June 2003. Other contenders for the scheme
were Galliford, Ballast, Shepherd, Hochtief/Sewell and
Interserve.
More disciplinary sanctions for Architects
Errant architects are to face a wider range of disciplinary
sanctions, which will include a cautionary 'yellow card', according
to the annual report of the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
"We have introduced a cautioning process for complaints that do not
merit proceeding to a formal hearing by the professional conduct
committee," said ARB chairwoman Dr Barbara Kelly. The report shows
that last year there was a total of 29,905 registered architects.
This marked a 4.5% decline over the past 10 years. Some 12% of the
total were female architects.
plans for £250m Glasgow Business Park
Scottish First Minister Henry McLeish will reveal plans for a
£250m business park in Glasgow next month. The park, in the
Broomielaw district of Glasgow, is designed to attract financial
services firms to the city. Scottish Enterprise, Locate in
Scotland, Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Executive have all
pledged their support for the plans.
Balfour wins £4.5m Citypoint project
Balfour Beatty has taken a £4.5m contract to design and build
a five-storey office block in Glasgow for client Taylor Clark. The
project, known as Citypoint Phase 2, starts on site this month and
is due for completion next summer.
SGB rovacabin plans triple expansion
SGB Rovacabin intends to treble the size of its cabin and modular
building hire fleet from 4,500 units to 12,000 by the end of 2004.
The company plans to double turnover to £30m in the same
period. Rovacabin also plans to inject funds into expanding its
branch network. The company has sold its Thame manufacturing site
for an undisclosed sum to the Elliot Group to provide the capital
injection. Rovacabin's first 1,000-cabin branch will open in north
London later this month.
George Brumwell re-appointed to HSC
George Brumwell has been re-appointed for a further three-year term
as a member of the policy-making Health & Safety Commission.
The UCATT leader was nominated by the TUC specifically to represent
those working in the most dangerous industries.

Mowlem's south west building business E Thomas Construction has
taken on Simon Warne as business development manager. Richard Neall
has been appointed managing director of Jackson Civil Engineering.
Gary Miller, Mark Payne and Alec Sarjeant have been promoted to
associate directors responsible for design, contracting and
commercial departments respectively at Briggs & Forrester
(Mechanical Services). National decorating and maintenance
specialist Cousins Group has appointed Adrian McEwen as procurement
director. Mike Voss has been promoted to West Midlands regional
director of the building division of Norwest Holst Construction.
