Caterpillar's boast of having "the biggest toolbox in the world"
was definitely an advantage when it came to supplying Cleanaway
with a range of equipment. The waste management and recycling
specialist has taken eight machines from Caterpillar dealer
Finning, ranging from waste handlers to compactors.
Included in the deal are a brace of Cat 325 tracked excavators (one
fitted with a grapple and high-rise cab, the other with a 14m
extended reach arm), two Cat 950G wheeled loaders, three D350E
ADTs, a used D250E ADT and the first 836G compactor in Europe. At
53t the 836G is the largest compactor in the range and has a
5.19m-wide blade and almost 400kW of power.
As refuse is very light the D350Es have had their chassis extended
to accept the larger 80m3 body as used on the D400. These are
fitted with a hydraulically operated lid to prevent spillage onto
haul roads.
A modification to the 950G wheel loaders is the fitment of a 6m3
bucket in place of the standard 2.5m3 units. XRD2 mining tyres are
fitted to withstand any damage from sharp objects in the refuse
during heavy duty transfer work.
The 14m-long reach arm for the 325 excavator is a health and safety
initiative allowing the operator to load over a wall and position
the machine further away from the ADTs while loading. It is also
modified to assist in preventing articulated road trucks from
falling over while tipping on the landfill.
