Prime Contract offers invited

Defence Estates has invited expressions of interest for a £10m stand-alone prime contract for capital works at Keogh Barracks in Ash Vale, near Aldershot, Hampshire. The project, which will be awarded in autumn 2003, includes single living accommodation and a canteen.

Asbestos victim dies after being in HSE video

A 57-year-old asbestos victim who appeared in the Health & Safety Executive video shown at February's construction safety conference has died from an asbestos-related cancer. In making the video, Clive Cullender, who knew his illness was terminal, was extremely keen to alert younger workers to the dangers of asbestos.

Morrison wins £13m work in north east

Morrison Construction's north east business has secured four new contracts worth £13m. Work includes a new physical, recreational and training centre at RAF Leuchars for Defence Estates and a 1,765m2 survival-training centre in Aberdeen for oil safety specialist RGIT Montrose.

Skanska wins £30m schools deal

Skanska Construction has won a three-year framework agreement with CLASP (Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme), the body behind one of the longest-running building systems for schools and public buildings. Under the deal, worth over £30m, Skanska and CLASP will work with the local government and public sector bodies to harness the latest technology in building.

High Court battle begins over Tube PPP

London mayor Ken Livingstone's challenge to London Underground's public private partnerships as imposed by the government will be heard over four days in the High Court this week. Livingstone and former transport commissioner Bob Kiley have said that if they fail to stop the PPP, they will do their best to make it work.

Three shortlisted for Defence Estates jobs

ABB, BAe Systems and Siemens have been shortlisted for a £15m airfield ground lighting control system replacement and 15-year maintenance contract for Defence Estates. The contract will be awarded towards the end of the year.

Call to overhaul site safety standards

Construction industry staff and union officials met this week on the anniversary of the deaths of two Staffordshire workers to agree improved safety procedures at sites in the county. The Site Safety Day marked the deaths of Mick and Carl Redgate, who were killed in an accident on a site in Stoke-on-Trent on 23 July last year. Operatives representing sites in Staffordshire presented safety action plans to prevent the repetition of similar incidents. "The initiative sees the total involvement of operatives in the development of safety plans and activities on every site as the critical element in the development of a zero accident culture," said a spokesman for the North Staffordshire Site Safety Campaign. The campaign will press for every construction firm in the Staffordshire area to become involved.

Contract Journal golf challenge
