Edmund Nuttall 'one of the top performers'

Edmund Nuttall made a pre-tax profit of £15m last year. Peter Brooks, managing director, said the figure maintains Nuttall's position as "one of the top performers" in the UK civil engineering sector.

Turnover in the 12 months to 31 December 2000 was £303m, slightly down on the previous figure of £312m which generated a pre-tax profit of £18m.

Nuttall is increasingly focused on four sectors: rail, road, water and environmental. It has entered framework and alliance arrangements for capital works and maintenance with several clients.

Two of the largest such deals are the North West Alliance with Railtrack, worth £120m over five years, and the Broadlands PFI, valued at £120m over 20 years, where the client is the Environment Agency.

Projects completed during the year included the infrastructure contracts for the Greenwich peninsular for English Partnerships which, although won in competition, were all undertaken on an informal partnering basis over a three-year period.

Design and construct contracts for two major port installations on the Humber for the Simon Group and Associated British Ports both opened for business. An airport terminal at Harare was finished, the work being undertaken on a turnkey design and construct arrangement in joint venture with Interbeton. Both Nuttall and Interbeton are part of HBG, the international construction group based in Holland.

Brooks said that Nuttall had made a "high investment" last year in tendering for larger projects. As a result, the business has a strong orderbook, he added.

To boost capability in the rail market, Nuttall has acquired Finchpalm, the specialist signalling company.

Nuttall's other specialist division is Ritchies. It provides drilling and blasting services to the quarry and opencast industries, increasingly working within long-term contract arrangements.

The buoyant Irish market has provided an opportunity for Nuttall to combine with Ascon, another HBG business. The pair have secured two contracts in Ireland and have pre-qualified for the first two Irish PFI roads schemes.
