A new NVQ for tool operators in the construction industry was
confirmed last week with the award of the first two certificates in
diamond drilling and sawing. This NVQ takes the total number of
such courses designed specifically to meet the demands of
construction to 67.
The first two recipients of the award, John Griffith and Mark
Spicer of Plumstead-based Kingstar Conracts, gained the certificate
through a procedure known as 'on-site assessment and training'.
The programme lasts 10 months and was developed by the Construction
Industry Training Board for experienced workers who do not have
formal qualifications but have gained industry experience during
their careers. Kingstar has become an assessment centre for the
course and has registered 34 candidates on the programme.
The expansion in construction-based NVQs follows the increasing
desire for a demonstrably qualified and competent workforce. With
the Major Contractors Group and the Confederation of Construction
Clients both seeking to insist on workers carrying skills cards,
the onus on attaining NVQs has increased.
