J Murphy boring for National Grid
Doris, one of three tunnel boring machines to be used by J Murphy
on a project with the National Grid, gets its final checkover
before starting work this week.
Along with two other Lovat-type full-face machines - Helen and
Caroline - Doris is being used to drive a 20km cable tunnel from a
substation in Elstree, Hertfordshire, to St John's Wood in London
to meet increasing electricity demands in the capital.
The three machines have been refurbished and modified by Murphy to
suit the needs of the particular ground conditions; in this
instance London clay with some sand in the first 2km.
Doris and her colleagues will measure 60m long, with the train for
soil excavation, and are set to excavate 50m of completed tunnel
per day.
