Plant fatalities rise
Nearly a quarter of the 114 fatal accidents in the construction
industry for the year to 31 March 2001 involved plant and
machinery.
Statistics from the Health & Safety Executive show that 25
deaths - 22% of all fatalities - were plant-related, a significant
increase on the previous two years: 12 (18%) in 1998/99 and 13
(15%) in 1999/2000.
The biggest increases were in transport accidents involving dump
trucks, fork lifts and excavators, and in collapsing and
overturning plant.
In the most recent 12-month period, there were 12 plant-related
transport deaths compared to five and four in previous years. This
year there were five deaths due to collapsing or overturning plant;
there were none in the previous two years.
