Foreign labour set to rise
by John d'Arcy
There is an increased likelihood that this country's site skill
needs will in future be met by labour and companies coming from
outside the UK, according to David Edwards, chief executive of the
Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).
In the ECITB's latest annual report, Edwards says the sector
continues to experience serious difficulties in recruiting skilled
workers. This is attributed in part to the poor image of
construction as a whole and partly to growing competition between
sectors for the best young recruits.
Engineering construction sites still face a severe manpower problem
caused by an ageing workforce.
However, the training board reports encouraging progress in curbing
the trainee dropout rate. The number of apprentices successfully
completing their training is said to be in excess of 75%, compared
to a national average of 35%.
