Birse gets designs on road structure

Birse Construction will spend the next four to five months working on the design and development for a new road structure to provide easy access to Birmingham's Eastside re-development area. Birmingham City Council has been selected as preferred civil engineer for the £25m project, which involves the demolition of existing concrete structures and the creation of level roads and tree-lined boulevards.

Wates awarded £7.3m call centre work

Wates Construction has scooped a £7.3m contract for the Victoria Exchange call centre, in Manchester, by Vector Investments. Following demolition of retail units and a cinema, Wates is about to start work on the conversion of the premises and the construction of a new mezzanine floor for the 7,432m2 call centre.

£20m brewery job for sir Robert Mcalpine

Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed as the main contractor for the Old Brewery Quarter in Cardiff. The £20m scheme is a joint venture for Mansford Holdings, SA Brian & Co and newly appointed partner Countryside Properties. The scheme combines retail outlets with cafes, office suites and New York-style apartments over a total of 7,896m2.

Balfour beatty wins £21m student digs deal

Balfour Beatty Construction is due to start work this month on a £21m student accommodation block at the University of Edinburgh. It includes a caf' and laundry. Work will finish summer 2003. Also due to start is work on an extension at the International Centre in Telford, Shropshire, in a £6.5m contract. The contractors will build a new concourse and new conference and exhibition facilities.

The National Assembly for Wales is looking for a design and build contractor to work on the construction of 7.2km of single carriageway road improvements on the A470 trunk road in the County Borough of Conwy, North Wales.
