Shepherd favourite
Shepherd is tipped to win the race to build a £20m new
members' stand at York Racecourse, to be announced this week.
Industry insiders are putting their shirts on Shepherd because "the
company is local and it's also a known quantity to the
client".
Shepherd was involved in the last major building project at the
racecourse when it built the £12.5m Knavesmire stand in
1996.
Work on the new stand is set to start on site soon after the
contract award because it has to be completed in time for the
beginning of the May 2003 racing season.
The new five-storey County Stand will accommodate 15,000 racegoers
and feature seating, a bar and restaurant.
York Racecourse is funding the scheme with the help of a £7.7m
loan from the Horserace Betting Levy Board.
The racecard for the contract also features Laing, HBG and Sir
Robert McAlpine.
