Fear that Quality Mark may not deter cowboys

The Quality Mark (QM) initiative may not be the cowboy-deterrent that the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) hoped and could even be playing into the hands of cowboy builders, according to the Construction Industry Council (CIC).

So far the QM phone line has received an average of 80 calls a day, 80% of which are asking for a list of traders. The website has had a total of 4,500 visits, a figure regarded by DTI staff as "encouraging".

CIC chief executive Graham Watts said: "Although the CIC feels that QM is a good idea and we fully support it, there has been a boom in domestic building work since the idea was conceived and launched last month.

"Smaller businesses just don't have time to complete the paperwork to become Quality Marked and they don't have the incentive to do it because they have already got more work than they can handle."
