companies gear up for Hodnet bypass
Five firms have hit the road for the £12m design and build A53
Hodnet bypass in Shropshire. The line-up is Alfred McAlpine,
Norwest Holst, Mowlem, Balfour Beatty and Kier. A start on site is
expected next February, with completion due within 18 months. The
project includes a 6.6km bypass of Hodnet and Wollerton, and two
bridges across the River Tern. The consultant for the scheme is the
Shrewsbury office of Parkman.
HSE gets thumbs-up for laboratory
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has been given the go-ahead
for its £60m PFI health and safety laboratory on an existing
HSE site in Buxton. Health minister Alan Whitehead approved the
value-for-money case presented by the HSE and the Shepherd-led ICB
consortium, which also includes Rotch Property Group, Interserve
Investments and Charterhouse Project Equity Fund. Construction work
is due to begin in February for completion in mid-2004.
totty takes lead role in concert hall plan
Totty Construction has picked up a £5.8m contract to refurbish
Manchester University's Music and Drama Department. Totty will
carry out a combination of structural repairs, foundation work,
demolition and alterations to the university's Coupland II, Bragg
and workshop buildings. The contract will also see Totty construct
a new concert hall.
Mind the cumberland gap
A 12-week public consultation has begun on the Highways Agency's
plans for the £65m, five-and-a-half-mile missing link between
Junction 44 of the M6 at Carlisle and the A74(M) at Guards Mill.
Plans for the Cumberland Gap were drawn up by design consultants
Scott Wilson and Capita.
styles & wood is fit for leisure jobs
Styles & Wood has picked up a pair of contracts in the leisure
market worth more than £6m. The company has secured its third
contract with Virgin Active - a £4m, 31-week fit-out project
in Islington, London - and a £2.3m scheme for LA Fitness at
Pelham Street, London.
Schools get set for sports cash
Schools across England and Wales are to receive £541m in
Lottery money to build new sports facilities and to refurbish
existing ones. A total of £495m will be injected in England
and £46m in Wales. Awards in Northern Ireland and Scotland are
expected to be announced in the new year.

The Stationery Office has issued a book about maintenance
contracts, entitled A Guide to Measured Term Contracts. The book
states that a more vigorous approach to the management and cost
control of maintenance work is urgently needed. It looks at the
nature of measured term contracts, including where they can be
used, the documentation required, how they are operated, and their
advantages and disadvantages. It costs £40 and is available by

advice for Architects
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has issued a
guidance note which it hopes will set a new standard for planning
applications. The RIBA note recommends that architects should
follow 10 design stages in the preparation of full planning
