EH1700 dump truck trialled - NEWSBRIEF

byColin Sowman

Euclid-Hitachi has put Europe's first EH1700 rigid dump truck into Celtic Energy's Selar open cast mine in the Neath Valley on a 20-week evaluation trial at the start of its push in the European market.

The EH1700 has a 30-litre Stage 1 Cummins QST30 engine producing 895kW, a 12.5% increase over its R90C predecessor, and gives an extra 10% of torque providing enhanced productivity.

Payload has been increased to 98.4t, but the EH1700 pulls up the two mile, 10% ramp out of Selar a gear higher than the other machines on the site. A slightly lower (38.3mph) top speed has allowed better ratio spacing for the loaded run, although a higher gearing option is available.

The front axle has dry disc brakes and the rear uses wet discs giving 8% extra braking force over the previous model. Unladen descents into the mine are made using just the rear brakes.

The front suspension strut is filled with a compressible fluid called Neocon that effectively makes the suspension more progressive, said David Nus, manager of the heavy product international division. The 38.6m3 (struck) body has exhaust heating, even when raised - a process that takes 12.8 seconds using twin double-acting under-floor rams.

Michelin has developed a low-profile tyre for the truck to allow an increased payload while minimising the loading height. As the tyres' pressure is lower, Michelin said they are less susceptible to punctures and improve the ride quality. First 50t Llamada piling Rig to van elle
