3. CLIENT OF THE YEAR

Clients may nominate themselves or be put forward by their contractors or consultants. We are again looking for a client that is a model for the rest of the industry. The keys are leadership, innovation, strategic thinking and a long-term commitment to fostering improvement in construction. Judges will want to see a statement of what the client is trying to achieve, how it is being measured and what results are being achieved. Entries should also provide evidence of more open and less adversarial supply chain relationships.

4.CONSTRUCTION PRODUCT MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR

Entrants hoping to win this award should aim to impress the judges with their focus on sustainability issues that meet the government's objectives stated in the "Sustainable Construction Strategy". This might include: products that contribute to energy saving; the ability to recycle specific products; manufacturing processes that reduce energy consumption; and products that require less maintenance after installation. The judges will also be looking for a demonstration of high levels of research and development, investment and innovation relating to products and processes.

5. DEMOLITION CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

This award is open to all demolition contractors. Entrants must show outstanding business performance - innovation, good management, investment, flexibility, and the delivery of services on time and to budget. They should also provide evidence of effective communication with their clients, their own staff and the general public. The judges will pay special attention to best-practice environmental performance, particularly the minimisation of noise, pollution and disruption. And they will want to see proof of a commitment to health and safety.

6. DESIGNER OF THE YEAR

Designers may nominate themselves, or be put forward by clients or contractors. This award will be made to the architect, engineer or other designer that has most effectively used design to produce benefits for its client or the community. As well as the aesthetic contribution, the judges will want to see innovation to raise functionality, lower costs or otherwise add value to the business or service performance of the client. Evidence of good management along with excellent communication and integration with the construction team is also required.

7. IT AWARD

Judged by a specialist IT panel, this award is for any company in the construction industry supply chain (including consultants, research firms and academic groups) that can prove it has used IT creatively to improve its performance substantially. The judges are not looking for descriptions of fancy computer equipment or cutting edge software, rather the innovative application of these technologies to make an impact on the business. Benefits could include better information management and dissemination, reduced costs, shorter timescales, greater productivity, improved reliability or higher quality.

8. LONG-TERM PARTNERING AWARD

This joint award is open to any organisations working together in a long-term arrangement designed to achieve a step-change in construction performance. Examples could include framework agreements, alliances and prime contracts, and supply chain agreements with specialists, suppliers or manufacturers. The judges will expect to see evidence of innovation, measured improvement against agreed targets, team integration, and supply chain management, learning and feedback.

9. MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AWARD

NEW CATEGORY

Entrants will need to show how they achieve corporate objectives through implementing pre-selected strategies and tactical actions. They will also have to demonstrate how the progress of activity is measured though accomplishment of pre-agreed milestones. Judges are also looking for client/customer relationship management activities which have led to increased loyalty of the entrant's services and/or products. Entries should provide evidence of the value of internal and external communications in terms of results and successes.

10. PLANT HIRER OF THE YEAR

Entries are welcome from large and small plant hirers - this award is all about good business performance and professionalism. Entrants should be able to show that they are proactive in determining customer needs and that they are developing added value. The judges will also want to see details of investment in the plant fleet, and a management team committed to maintenance, reliability, training and safety. In order to demonstrate their ability to fund investment, all companies entering this award must include a copy of their most recent published accounts.

11. PPP/PFI AWARD

Entries are welcomed from PPP/PFI clients, contractors, designers and consortia. The judges will look for submissions that describe clearly how projects have provided better value or a higher quality of service than the public sector equivalent. Entries should also show innovation, planning for long-term operating issues and flexibility - the ability to overcome problems and work within the constraints of the public sector, while not being shackled by them.

12. SPECIALIST CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

Entries are encouraged from companies of all sizes specialising in activities such as: plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation, lift or escalator installation; piling; ground works; cladding; curtain walling; steel, concrete or timber frame construction; roofing; and brickwork. The judges will look for firms that can demonstrate effective communication and integration with other members of the construction team. Entrants need to show they have good management systems and are in control of time and costs. They should also be able to prove that they are effectively managing their own supply chains.

13.THE SILVER HELMET AWARD FOR SAFETY

NEW AT THE CJ AWARDS

Presented to the company making the most significant contribution to the improvement of safety in the UK building and civil engineering industry, the Silver Helmet Award is the most prestigious in construction. Entrants will need to show their safety policy involves commitment, co-operation and communication, and a measurable improvement in safety performance. Initiative and innovation will also be taken into consideration.

14. TRAINING AWARD

Entries are welcome from contractors, specialists, manufacturers, suppliers and designers. The judges will be looking for evidence of commitment to develop personnel across the business - from the craft level to senior management (where appropriate) - in keeping with the principals of "Investors in People". Entrants must show investment designed to maximise team performance and to prepare the workforce to meet clients' needs. The scale of training spend per head and the use of training programmes to attract school and college leavers into the industry will be taken into account.
