An incident on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) project in which
a union official is said to have been the victim of a "serious
assault" by security staff "makes a complete nonsense of all this
talk about improving the industry's image," according to George
Brumwell, general secretary of UCATT.
The UCATT chief claims regional official Brian Rye was attacked by
security guards when he visited the Murphy/Hochtief CTRL 320
contract on Monday of last week. He wanted to talk to operatives on
the site.
Brumwell said that, after attempting to visit the site canteen, Rye
was wrestled to the ground by "three or four security heavies". He
was pinned to the ground for nearly half an hour and at one stage
lost consciousness.
Police were summoned. Rye was later taken to hospital in Dartford
for a check-up. He was released after being treated for cuts and
bruises, but did not return to work last week.
In a statement (supported by CTRL), the Hochtief/Murphy joint
venture said that Rye had visited the site early after booking a
date of 13 August and was told by security to make an appointment
for another day.
Rye told staff at the gates that the August date was a typing error
and insisted he visited the site immediately. The security staff
restrained Rye when he became abusive and struck staff, the
statement declares.
