Almost 40% of construction workers could miss seeing the England v
Argentina World Cup match on Friday 7 June thanks to their
heartless bosses.
In the latest CJ Question reader survey, 377 of the 974 respondents
said they will not let employees have time off to watch the game.
This is a scenario that could result in unprecedented levels of
skiving and bogus illnesses. One respondent added: "The number of
absentees in construction that day may just outdo that of the
injury-ravaged England squad!"
A benevolent 37% of respondents said they would allow their workers
to watch the game, while 24% will be turning a blind eye.
One company that is on the ball when it comes to keeping its
workforce happy is Capital Projects Consultancy. "We have installed
a plasma TV screen at our site in Old Broad Street. The initial
England and Ireland matches will be shown and further matches will
be relayed depending on the teams' progress," said chief executive
John Gidman.
"The deal is that no alcohol is allowed, but anyone who wishes to
watch the matches can have time off on site," Gidman added.
Edmund Nuttall will be getting a red card from its operatives as it
will not be allowing them to watch the game. "If Nuttall employees
want to watch any of the match they'll have to take it as holiday,
which is what I'm doing," said a spokesman.
