Mott MacDonald wins Crossrail work

Mott MacDonald has been appointed to provide multi-disciplinary design services for Crossrail line 1.

Work involves providing design services for all tunnels and underground stations for line 1 as well as for surface railways to the east.

This contract builds on previous work Mott MacDonald has undertaken for Crossrail, including a number of transportation studies in east London.

The appointment coincides with the publication of the Crossrail line 1 Stakeholder Consultation report.

The report identifies the economic and planning objectives for the project; provides information on the six short-listed routes; and explains the sifting and appraisal criteria that will be used to determine the preferred scheme. In addition, it sets out the process and timescales for decisions on line 1.

Norman Haste, chief executive of Cross London Rail Links, said: "In order to reach a decision on a preferred scheme for Crossrail line 1 by our deadline of autumn 2002, the Crossrail team faces a number of tough decisions over the coming months. Input from our stakeholders, particularly the local authorities, will be vital in determining the preferred route and in making the case for the project."

Following the period of consultation which ends on 26 July, a preferred scheme will be announced in the autumn and the public will be invited to comment on this proposal before the end of the year. A final scheme will be selected for Crossrail line 1 at the end of 2002.
