Steelwork firms vote to withdraw from 'ineffective' Constructionline
The Register of Qualified Steelwork Contractors (RQSC) will begin a
phased withdrawal from Constructionline, the government's register
of qualified contractors, on 1 August.
"Constructionline is a good thing, but it hasn't worked for us,"
said RQSC administrator Gillian Mitchell. "The bulk of our members'
work comes from main contractors, but Constructionline focuses on
local authorities."
RQSC-accredited firms will see a drop in their registration fees
because the cost included Constructionline registration.
RQSC-accredited firms that wish to remain on Constructionline will
need to register directly.
Meanwhile, the RQSC is waiting for a meeting with Railtrack to
discuss the benefits of the scheme (CJ 13 March). The original
meeting, set for the end of April, was postponed.
Last year the Highways Agency made accreditation to RQSC mandatory
for steelwork contractors hoping to win bridge works.
The RQSC is administered by the British Constructional Steelwork
Association,
