Alfred McAlpine quits MCG

Alfred McAlpine has become the latest high profile name to quit the Major Contractors Group (MCG) after deciding that it was "no longer right for the group".

The withdrawl means that MCG membership now stands at 20 following Birse's decision to walk away in April and the departures of Balfour Beatty and Laing last year .

In a statement the company said that following the acquisition of both facilities management and utility services, McAlpine is a "far broader company than just a contractor". It added: "The MCG is therefore no longer the right industry group for McAlpine."

However, it stressed that it would continue to support the MCG's drive towards a qualified workforce and very much improved health and safety and environmental services.

The company added that its capital projects businesses remained an important part of the group and that it was fully committed to the ongoing development of its civil engineering and special projects businesses.

The MCG was unavailable for comment.
