Volvo has completed the integration of the Champion brand of motor
graders, bought five years ago, with the launch of its new
B-series. The new machines feature Volvo's own engines,
transmission, and a redesigned cab.
In the seven machine range are two all-wheel drive graders,
including the 16.6t G746B, according to Volvo the most powerful
all-wheel drive grader in the industry with a maximum power output
of 181kW. There are also five tandem drive machines ranging from
14t to just under 20t.
Two engines are used in the range - 7.1 litre and 9.6 litre stage
II compliant diesels - with outputs from 105kW to 181kW and
equipped with Volvo's variable horsepower system. These engines are
said to match fuel efficiency with high torque at low revs to
facilitate control across all speeds.
Transmission is via the proven Volvo 8400 box with eight forward
and four reverse ratios including five speeds below 17.7km/h
(11mph), a high-speed road maintenance gear, a snow-ploughing speed
and a gear for high-speed roading.
Disengaging the drive to the front wheels is done at the flick of a
switch and the machines can be operated in creep mode (where only
the front wheels are driven) at speeds of up to 3.2km/h (2mph).
Inside the redesigned cab, the seat and control pedestal can be
adjusted independently, while the controls and gauges are arranged
in a 90û arc to the front and right of the operator.
The Contronic Monitoring System used on Volvo's wheeled loaders,
excavators and ADT's has also been adapted for use on the graders
and has become the nerve centre of the machine.
