Five firms have hit the road for a £50m design and construct
deal near Newbury, Berkshire.
The line-up for the A34 Chieveley bypass is Mowlem, Amec, Nuttall, Skanska and Costain - the firm that built the controversial Newbury bypass in the late 1990s.
The Highways Agency will choose the winner early in 2003 to meet its target of making a start on site on the project by the end of the current financial year.
The job includes a 3.5km bypass of the M4 junction 13 roundabout, new slip roads and major maintenance of the M4 west of junction 13.
