Three chase PFI schools

by Glenda Thisdell

HBG, Balfour Beatty and Interserve are over the first hurdle in the chase for a £70m PFI schools deal in Crawley, West Sussex.

They leave behind bids from Skanska, Jarvis, Ballast and Carillion.

The three firms must now make up best and final offers to be submitted in advance of an award of contract in August 2003.

The contract involves the building or remodelling of up to four secondary schools in the borough. But it might also include leisure facilities for the local communities at all sites. These may be in the form of sports facilities, youth wings and adult education facilities, as well as other special support centres. The project may also include building a primary school on one of the secondary school sites. The operation contract is for no less than 25 years.
