The Construction Confederation (CC) has appointed Andy Sneddon as director of health and safety.

Sneddon, who succeeds Suzannah Nichol, who took on the role of director of the National Specialist Contractors Council this month, has over 10 years experience in the field of health and safety, having worked as a regulator and practitioner in the construction industry.

A former Health and Safety Executive inspector, Sneddon regards the new asbestos regulations, improving consultation and communication with the workforce, developing appropriate programmes with respect to emerging legislation from Europe, and ensuring appropriate levels of training across the workforce, as the most important issues.

Sneddon said: "The vast majority of UK contractors have an overwhelming commitment to the welfare of those who work for them. I look forward to working with others to find consistent and practical ways for this commitment to produce better health and safety conditions on UK sites.

"I am keen to engage in a constructive dialogue with colleagues and institutions within the EU, and to promote the practical and effective involvement of the workforce on a day to day basis.

"Contractors are faced with the difficult task of effectively implementing UK health and safety, especially within the commercially challenging health and safety environment  that always prevails in construction. I look forward to making my contribution to helping the industry secure simple and effective solutions to these challenges."
