Construction worker named victim of terrorist bomb

Civilian contractor David Caldwell died yesterday (1 August) from wounds he suffered after picking up a booby-trapped lunch box at an Army base in Londonderry.

Caldwell was working at the Caw Territorial Army Camp as part of a team carrying out renovations. He was the first person to open the gates at 7.20am. Hew entered a Portakabin on the site and picked up a lunch box that had not been there the previous day. The device exploded, causing fatal injuries to his face, hands and stomach.

Caldwell, who was 51 and a protestant, lived near Eglington, Co Londonderry with his girlfriend of 19 years and their teenage daughter.

Security sources have blamed the Real IRA for the murder - the first carried out by the dissident republican terrorists since the Omagh bombing in 1998.

Police have urged vigilance - the attack is similar to three others in the area on what they call "soft targets".
