Hanson's positive results
Hanson has announced a pre-tax profit of £130m on a turnover
of £2bn for the first half of the year.
Announcing the results, chief executive Alan Murray said: "This has
been an encouraging first half and the pattern looks set to
continue." Assuming normal weather and no further weakness in the
dollar, Murray expects a marginal improvement for the year compared
to Hanson's 2001 results.
The Hanson Building Materials Europe division had a turnover of
£710m (£670m) and a trading profit of £71m
(£62m). UK operations generated 89% of this figure.
In the UK, asphalt volumes rose 6.1% as a result of strong demand
in the Midlands and South West. Murray said that price increases in
March appear to be holding up. The Aggregates Levy is being passed
on "without significant market disruption".
The UK brick operation performed well, with trading profit 13%
higher at £14m.
