Skills shortage delays Hackney housing work
A shortage of skilled labour is likely to mean slow progress on a
massive London housing regeneration scheme.
According to an insider, Hackney Borough Council's £450m-plus
Woodberry Down scheme may take up to 12 years to complete because
of difficulties getting contractors on board.
An advert calling for a consortium to take charge of building the
scheme will appear in the OJEC in November. A start date has been
provisionally set for autumn 2003.
Plans include the decanting and demolition of 1,000 substandard
homes built in the 1940s and the refurbishment of a further 1,500
homes, plus construction of 1,500 homes.
The council plans to have a draft of the master plan ready by
October, but a final version will not be finished until June next
year.
