McCarthy treads carefully
Following the discovery of a cache of ammunition at a McCarthy
& Stone site in Wiltshire (CJ 31 July), Wiltshire County
Council has carried out a magnetic survey of the site before
allowing work to recommence.
The council's emergency planning officer Mark Kimberlin said: "The
surface scan has come up with a number of returns. Unfortunately,
the scanner can't differentiate between nails and cans and mortars,
so we have asked the International School of Search and Explosives
Engineers to investigate further."
A second large cache was found last week. "They unearthed at least
100 grenades, 50-plus anti-tank projectiles and approximately 40
two inch mortar shells and various detonating devices," said
Kimberlin.
"Some of it was for training and not explosive, but some of it was
live, so it was all treated as live."
