Workmen die after being electrocuted by overhead cables

Two workmen were killed yesterday (Wednesday) after they were electrocuted as they manoeuvred a lighting standard in Scotland.

The unnamed workmen, who were aged 32 and 22, were employed by the contractor Lightways. They had been hired to replace street lighting for Inverclyde Council, but died after they came into contact with an 11kV overhead cable at the side of the road.

The accident, which occurred in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, was compounded by the fact that it was witnessed by one of the dead men's father, part of the work group.

ScottishPower personnel, police and Health & Safety Exective inspectors are conducting investigations into the accident.
