HA to spend £140m on making A66 safer
The Highways Agency (HA) is to draw up plans to make the A66 in
northern England a dual-carriageway in a project worth at least
£140m to the construction industry.
The scheme covers the stretch between Scotch Corner and Penrith.
The project will kick off with 6km between Scotch Corner and Carkin
Moor and a 4.8km stretch from Greta Bridge to Stephen Bank.
The two schemes will join the A66 Temple Sowerby deal, a 4.9km
stretch that was added to the HA's Targeted Programme of
Improvements earlier this year.
The aim is to have these three schemes completed within the next
five years.
Transport minister John Spellar has asked the HA to carry out a
short-term programme of safety improvements on the A66, such as
junction upgrades, better signing and road markings.
During the past 10 years, more than 70 motorists have been killed
in accidents on the cross-Pennines route, leading to repeated calls
for urgent improvements.
