A cost-effective alternative to dig and dump, developed by Lafarge,
has completed successful trials and is ready to roll.
Lafarge Envirocem Solutions general manager Keith Bradshaw told CJ:
"Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) is the term for the
reaction of special cements from Blue Circle, which we've branded
Envirocem. It is a treatment for contaminated land, soils and
wastes that gives improved performance characteristics in the
stabilisation/solidification of contaminants."
One of the benefits of the solution is that it gives a carbonation
reaction in minutes so there is no waiting for curing and it can be
placed immediately.
Bradshaw explained that it can be more cost effective than dig and
dump as it reduces vehicle movement by up to 90%.
"It eliminates the need for importing backfill materials, and the
flexibility of the system allows for targeted treatment of hot
spots," said Bradshaw.
Lafarge has carried out several trials of the solution, including
one for Holton Borough Council and at the Astra Fireworks site in
Kent.
"The equipment is ready, the ACT has obtained the mobile plant
licence and we are looking for sites," added Bradshaw.
