Wilson Bowden buys former RAF land for £90m

Wilson Bowden has bought 92ha of the former RAF Burtonwood site, near Warrington, from Defence Estates for £90m.

David Wilson, group chairman and chief executive, said: "Not only is this one of the few major land allocations in the North West but its comparatively straightforward infrastructure requirements and the existing four site accesses give unique opportunities for early development of the site and for land swaps. As a result it is hoped that a wide range of housing provision will commence in the Spring."

The brownfield site has outline planning consent for 2,000 new homes and the creation of an urban village.

"This mixed use site will comprise some 48ha of residential development and will encompass the full David Wilson Homes product range from one and two bedroom apartments to five bedroom detached executive homes. Also included in the plans are commercial and retail units, along with transport facilities and a public park," said a company spokesman.

Wilson Bowden anticipates that it will take over 10 years to complete development of the site and the total consideration of £90m will be satisfied from the companies existing loan facilities.
