Darling to announce progress on 10-Year Transport Plan

Transport secretary Alistair Darling is today (Tuesday) expected to scale back plans to boost rail use and cut car congestion in his progress report to the Commons this afternoon on the government's £180bn 10-Year Transport Plan.

Rumours in the media this morning highlight an expected climb down on key targets in the 10-year plan which will provoke angry responses from both Conservative MPs and Labour's own backbenchers.

According to the political website ePolitix, Downing Street has already conceded that there was "considerable improvements" to be made with the plan and that "it would take a long time to put right".

Yesterday the Confederation of British Industry estimated that rising costs may have increased the cost of the transport plan from £180 billion to £195 billion, mainly due to the state of the railways.

Gwyneth Dunwoody, chairman of the Commons transport committee, was quoted over the weekend that any further reductions in train services would be unacceptable.
