The £4bn development of the
Millennium Dome and its surroundings has moved a step closer with
the submission of a planning application yesterday (Wednesday) to
Greenwich Council by the scheme organisers.
If planning permission is granted, the £135m work of
transforming the central part of the Dome, in Greenwich, south
London, into an entertainment and sports arena could start in
mid-2003.
Ten-thousand new homes, shops, offices, a new school, and a
26,000-seat arena inside the Dome, were all included in the
planning application.
The application was submitted by government regeneration agency
English Partnerships, which owns the Dome site, property consortium
Meridian Delta, and sports and entertainment company Anschutz
Entertainment Group Europe.
The work on the Dome is part of a 20-year regeneration of the
Greenwich peninsula, and is expected to bring 24,000 long-term jobs
to the area.
