Site clearance works to begin on A34/M4 improvement scheme

New Asset

Trees and shrubs will be removed from the site of the A34 Chieveley M4 Junction 13 improvement scheme before the end of February to ensure a timely start to the contract.

The main works contractor award is planned for March - the shortlist comprises: Mowlem; Amec; Nuttall; Skanska; and Costain. And the Highways Agency says that the site clearance will save the appointed contractor time when it comes to commencing the main works in late spring. Completion is scheduled for early 2005.

The site clearance has also been timed to minimise disruption to nesting birds and mammals. A qualified bat worker will be present throughout the clearance work to rescue any bats that are disturbed.

The major element of the design and build contract is a new 3km dual carriageway section of the A34 passing underneath the M4. It also includes new slip roads from the A34 on to the M4, new access arrangements to the nearby Chieveley Service Station, maintenance depot and hotel, seven new bridges and major maintenance on both M4 carriages west of the junction.
