Scotland's crumbling road network could be up to standard much quicker than anticipated given that the Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey (SRMCS) is ahead of schedule.
The five-year SRMCS contract to survey road conditions across the 56,000km road network is carried out by The Society of Chief Officers for Transportation in Scotland (SCOTS) and is making good speed.
Although the exact reduction in time is as yet unknown, the early completion of the survey will mean that performance indicators can be drawn up earlier to determine where emergency road repairs need to start.
SCOTS was appointed to carry out the survey after a Audit Scotland report in 2000 revealed cracking and edge deterioration across the road network.
