Executive defends Glasgow link following poor value for money claims

The Scottish Executive remains committed to the £130m Glasgow Airport rail link despite reports that it will not provide value for money.

Reports yesterday by The Herald newspaper revealed that consultants carrying out the report on the link have concluded that the project could be a financial blackhole.

The Executive said the link remained "one of its top 10 transport priorities".

However, The Herald's article also claims that future tickets sold on the route would not cover the costs of the contract.

Meanwhile consultant Sinclair Knight Merz has endorsed a similar rail link to Edinburgh Airport, even though it will cost twice a much as Glasgow.

However its traffic numbers for 2020 is expected to stand at 3.3 million people a year compared with Glasgow at 930,000 people.
